A Jack Russell Terrier has taken over my recliner. That is all.

Las Tortugas Deli Mexicana

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

I have driven past Deli Mexicana on Germantown Parkway just south of the Wolf River bridge for a long time and always wondered what a Mexican deli was. I finally checked it out today and I was highly impressed. Everything is fresh, handmade, and authentically Mexican.

If you’re looking for a place to gorge yourself on queso dip, fajitas, and a #35 combo-  this place isn’t for you. It’s apparent that this pisses some people off, because a note posted next to the register lets customers know that if you’re rude to the staff, they will refuse to serve you. After working in Germantown in the past, I can probably name a few of the residents that would go in with their inflated sense of entitlement and get belligerent when they can’t have an overflowing bowl of melted cheese to eat before their main course. I digress…

This place is to Mexican food what Green Bamboo is to Vietnamese food. Check the website for a menu & directions: Las Tortugas

Hi Tulsa People!

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Someone from a local TV station interviewed me yesterday while I was getting ready for my race and said that I’d be on an 11:00 show tonight. I found that I don’t have that channel on the hotel TV, so I’ll miss my lovely TV debut. He let me plug this site, so hopefully if you heard me, and you’re visiting, take a look around- you’ll find mostly race reports and photos, and a lot of other random stuff including home repair, animals, tattoos, and the like. Click “register” at the bottom of the page, leave a comment, and let me know what you think!

Hitchhhiker

Sunday, May 25th, 2008

After being out in the yard for a while this afternoon, I picked up a hitchhiker… Amblyomma americanum… AKA, the Lone Star Tick. It was trying to drain me, so I had to interrupt his (actually, HER, according to the photos) dinner. As much as I hate killing stuff, this one’s getting the flush.

It looked like the middle one here:

The Porch is Open!

Tuesday was the 1st annual Spring Front Porch Grand Opening Cookout. I can’t think of a better way to spend a post-bike-ride evening…

Guys, take note…

Nothing beats jewelry for your woman’s birthday. She’ll likely react just like I did when Ryan gave me this gorgeous chromoly steel piece by a famous designer named SRAM. It’s a lightweight, durable, and highly-sought after design.

How to repair a screen door

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

I’m smack in the middle of a week off of teaching, so I’ve been working on some home improvements- mainly the front porch. It was formerly a storage area, and I wanted to make it into a decent place to relax.

First, I had to fix both of my screen doors. The dogs had taken the liberty to convert them into doggie doors:
doggie door?

First, I pulled the trim off of the lower half of the door:

Next, I pulled the old screen off:

Then, I cut it off behind the middle trim piece and stapled the bottom of the old screen down:

I measured the hole and cut a piece to match:

I stapled the new screen on and replaced the trim, and VIOLA…

The dogs aren’t too happy, but I like it  :)

Oh yeah, and I put some plants into a weird hanging thing on my porch:
